What Evidence Do I Need?

When you apply for Council Tax Reduction or Housing Benefit, you will need to provide evidence to support your application.

Types of Evidence     

  • proof of your identity (for example, passport, birth certificate, driving licence)     
  • your National Insurance number (we will need to see this on an official document such as a payslip)       
  • payslips if you are working (five payslips if you are paid weekly, three if you are paid every two weeks or two if you are paid each month) alternatively your employer can complete an 'Earnings Certificate'
  • your statement of accounts if you are self-employed (fill in our Self Employed Form if you do not have your accounts set out)     
  • an estimate of your expected income if you have only just become self employed    
  • evidence of any other benefits you receive (known as an 'award notice' which is available from the organisation paying the benefit)    
  • statements for your bank or savings account including any evidence of other assets or investments (we will need two consecutive months' worth of statements)        
  • a 'Certificate of Childcare Costs' if you are paying for childcare - if you want us to take these costs into consideration you will need to be working, or receiving statutory sick or maternity pay as well as using a registered childcare provider 

Claims for Housing Benefit

If you are making a claim for Housing Benefit you will also need the following:        

  • a signed tenancy agreement    
  • your rent book or any receipts        
  • written confirmation from your landlord about when your tenancy started and what services (if any) are included in your rent - you can ask them to complete our 'Proof of Rent' form

Submitting Your Evidence

You can submit your evidence to us in the following ways:      

Email: scan copies to us at benefits@angliarevenues.gov.uk quoting your benefit claim reference number     

In person: bring your documents to us and we can scan them for you    

By post: send us your evidence in the post quoting your benefit claim reference number, we will post your documents back the same day, evidence should be posted to:

Alternatively you can take your documents to any of our customer contact centres 

If you aren't able to provide all the evidence we need, let us know. It is better to fill your application form for Council Tax Reduction or Housing Benefit and send us as much evidence as possible in the first instance so that your claim is not delayed.

You will need to tell us what information is missing and that you intend to provide it as soon as possible. We allow up to one month for all the evidence to be supplied.
